Relay for Life..

"Survivors Lap"

We were able to participate in the "Relay for Life" which is an annual fundraiser that our county holds each year to raise money for cancer research. All proceeds from this walk go to the American Cancer Society. The first year this walk was held in Ennis my dad was able to walk the "Survivor's Lap" which is the first lap of the relay and opens the event. The second year of the walk my niece Kayla put together a team to walk in honor of Grandpa. This year she wanted to do another team and we were able to go home to walk on her team. She raised over $1500 for her team and the Relay earned over $64000 total!! That is quite a sum, when you consider how small Madison County is. They had 23 teams participate in the walk this year!!

The walk starts at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night and ends at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. You have to set up a tent on the field for your "team headquarters" and you should have at least one member of your team walking on the track the entire time.

You can sponsor a luminaria in memory of someone battling cancer. There are so many of these sponsored that they completely line the track around the football field which is a quarter mile. It is quite an amazing sight. When you are walking and feel a little tired, you can just glance at those luminaria's and realize that a few laps around the track are pretty minor in comparison, to the battle against cancer. Val and I walked 60 laps, or 15 miles for our team. It was a great event, and we were happy to participate, to not only honor our dad, but also to help others in the battle....
